Starbucks is helping customers go plant-based with its new Meatless Mondays offer.
The popular coffee chain is promoting its vegetarian breakfast sandwiches and wraps.
From January 4 through January 25, Starbucks is giving U.S.-based customers $2 off three meatless menu items on Mondays. These include the Impossible™ Breakfast Sandwich, the Southwest Veggie Wrap, and the Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap.
Starbucks launched the Impossible™ Breakfast Sandwich in June 2020. It features vegan sausage made by California-based brand Impossible Foods. The coffee giant launched the new menu item to “meet the growing customer-interest in plant-based options.”
Served on ciabatta, the soy-based sausage breakfast sandwich includes dairy cheddar cheese and eggs. Starbucks’ veggie wrap features scrambled eggs, black beans, sous vide potatoes, cotija cheese, pico de gallo, and jalapeño cream cheese wrapped in a salsa tortilla. And the Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap features tomatoes in a whole-wheat tortilla.
This is the first time that Starbucks has offered the Meatless Mondays discount. The limited-time offer is valid at participating stores while supplies last.
Starbucks Vegan Options
The coffee chain’s expanding plant-based menu is partly due to its new sustainability commitments.
In January 2020, the company reaffirmed its goal of being a “resource positive” company and formalized environmental targets for 2030. These include cutting its water, carbon, and waste footprints in half.
“As we approach the 50th anniversary of Starbucks in 2021, we look ahead with a heightened sense of urgency and conviction that we must challenge ourselves, think bigger and do much more in partnership with others to take care of the planet we share,” Starbucks’ CEO Kevin Johnson said in a statement.
Starbucks has stated its plant-based offerings, including vegan milk options, would help it achieve these sustainability goals.
In December, the company announced it would be launching its Oatly vegan oat milk in all stores across the U.S. in spring 2021. This follows a successful regional trial across 1,300 stores in Midwest states in 2020.
In October, Starbucks revealed it is testing a fully plant-based breakfast sandwich at a single location in Issaquah, Washington. A Starbucks in Issaquah also began testing Miyoko’s Creamery vegan cream cheese in September.
