Both brands and consumers have come a long way in recent years, in terms of both understanding more about animal testing and making strides against it. However, we still have a ways to go in terms of eliminating it altogether.
Cruelty-Free International reports that globally, more than 115 million animals are taken from their natural habitat for animal testing each year. As consumers, when we purchase products that are tested on animals, it’s important to understand that we are either directly or indirectly funding the continuation of this practice. Ultimately, it’s up to each of us to make our own choices; to read labels and choose to support brands who we believe are doing the right thing.
The Many Benefits of Buying Cruelty-Free
Companies test their ingredients and products on mice, rabbits and other animals (including cats and dogs). In fact, research indicates that, in the United States, 10% of animal testing is done on cats and dogs – the animals that so many of us choose to include as a part of our family.
Though these companies often claim they favor animal testing in order to ensure their products are safe for humans, what they are actually doing is choosing the cheaper option. Companies can instead use in-vitro testing, cultured cell tissues and/or computer models instead of testing on live animals.
Cruelty-Free Products Use Fewer Chemicals
Cosmetic products as a whole contain more than 7,000 pure and natural ingredients, so there is no excuse for cosmetic companies to use animals or animal testing to create their products. Yet many companies test harmful chemicals on animals; chemicals which aren’t good for humans either. By choosing cruelty-free products, we are often choosing products that contain less harsh or harmful chemicals.
Companies that create cruelty-free products typically use more natural ingredients and sustainable materials. These companies are committed to helping the environment by utilizing eco-friendly practices, ingredients and packaging.
Give Back to Important Causes
Most brands that create cruelty-free products do so because they are passionate about creating natural, chemical-free and vegan products. Often they are also advocates, raising additional funds for animal and environmental causes and charities. Buying products from cruelty-free brands can help support these causes.
Help Build the Cruelty-Free Market
With 57% of surveyed companies agreeing that Not Tested on Animals is an important claim to make on product packaging, it is obvious that there is great movement being made in the cruelty-free product market. But more needs to be done to support this market, as well as to stop companies from doing any form of animal testing. Supporting cruelty-free brands sends a strong message to companies that have yet to go cruelty-free.
A Happier and Healthier You
Doing good feels good, and supporting cruelty-free brands, helping animals, the planet and yourself, can add to an overall feeling of great wellbeing. Only you hold the key to your happiness and health. Buy cruelty-free products and know that in doing so, you’re bettering yourself and the world around you.
